Interview with Wedding Planner Lorie Lau of H & L Lovely Creations

We had the pleasure of interviewing Lorie Lau, luxury Wedding Planner in Southern California and founder of H & L Lovely Creations. Together with her husband, Howard, the duo loves bringing exceptional events to life. Whether you’re dreaming of a luxury destination wedding or an intimate gathering closer to home, they work closely with their couples and a team of handpicked vendors to create a day that’s as unique as your love story.

We also recently had the opportunity to work with Lorie and Howard on a styled shoot here at The Estate at Via Las Palmas. The shoot was later published on Wedding Sparrow, an award winning platform for Weddings & Fine Art Curation. In our interview with Lorie, we get an insider’s look at the inspiration for the event as well as details on how they brought the vision to life. Lorie also shares her own thoughts about booking weddings and events here at The Estate at Via Las Palmas, planning wedding weekends, and also shares a word of advice to all couples planning their big day. Let’s get to know you…

What made you want to be a wedding planner? What’s your background? How long have you been in business?

When my now-husband proposed and we started planning our own wedding, we had no idea or direction of what to do (as all the newly engaged couples), so we walked that path alone and although we had the wedding of our dreams, we encountered so many bumps on the way and decided that we would love to help others NOT to walk the rough way but a smooth one rather; that’s how the idea started. We then prayed seeking wisdom to know if that was the right decision, we got confirmation and took the leap of faith, since then it’s been blessing after blessing.

I am by profession a Bachelor in Business Administration with a background in Dental and Medical Billing, I did that for over 13 years. My husband is an auto-technician and has served corporations like Toyota and the US Federal Government.

We’ve been in business “unofficially” since 2016, and everything became real in 2017.

What do you offer (month-of coordination, full-service planning, or à la carte planning)?

We are a full-event planning, styling & design boutique, so we offer all of the services mentioned, and we also do branding sessions or campaigns for businesses and entrepreneurs.

What is your planning process like?

Easy!!! haha. In all seriousness, we really want the planning journey to be as enjoyable and smooth as possible, so we have put all of our heart and soul in creating a seamless process for all of our clients. Whether is for a private/social event or a wedding.

What do you like about what you do? What is most rewarding about what you do?

We love the fact that we get to serve other people and make them happy. The feeling is remarkable when knowing that you were someone that helped create someone else’s dream and that’s a sweet reward.

What makes you stand out amongst other competitors? Why should someone hire you?

Every vendor is different and we all have our skills and talents. We don’t see other planners or vendors as competitors, we see them as our community, as family, as friends. We are passionate for service and the excellence of it, and we are here to give our very best to serve everyone equally, with respect, professionalism and kindness…that includes clients, vendors, planners or not. 😉

What’s your secret for staying calm under pressure, and how do you deal with day-of disasters?

I don’t have a secret pill, but I do (we) pray for wisdom each time, before, during and after ANY event.

Let’s talk about the event…

What was your vision for the event?

We wanted to combine a modern style with a twist of art deco hints.

Where did you find inspiration to bring your vision to life?

Honestly, everything flows from the team that you work with. Team work makes the dream work!!

Our main source of inspiration are the vendors who collaborate in the project. In this case, the photographer (and close friend Alyssa) had a vision for an art-deco wedding, she brought over the idea to us and we developed the rest. Everyone brought to the table their best talents and ideas to make this a reality. For example, our friend Hillary, the floral designer thought of a floral head piece, our friend Ioana, the cake designer thought of an eclectic/geometrical and small cake design that worked beautifully for the design. Everyone complements each other’s work and that’s how a vision comes to life!

What was your experience like planning an event at The Estate at Via Las Palmas?

It was lovely! we enjoyed planning for it, the property is magnificent, the owners are so friendly and helpful. We seriously can’t wait to be back soon.

What did you like most about the venue?

Oh, this is a hard question, but I guess, as a planner, I like that the venue is very spacious so it allows for so many things and ideas to be done. As a designer, I loved each space inside the house, all the decorative items are perfect.

What are your thoughts on weekend long weddings? Could you see yourself planning weekend long events here in the future?

Absolutely!! That’s a fun “weekend” full of events and we love planning those, we’ve had several in the past and more on the books for 2022.

What advice do you have for a couple planning their wedding at The Estate at Via Las Palmas?

More than advice, I would actually give them a word of encouragement. LOVE never fails! Remember that the wedding is NOT the finish line but the start line of everything else, you’re committing yourselves to each other for the rest of your days. Enjoy every moment of your wedding day, don’t worry about the little things-your guests don’t know what you’ve been planning.
